Weird, weird, weird, slowdown with gcc 3

Looks like it is a problem quite localised to my setup.

I see this problem on a laptop (Intel Pentium M 1300) running

    Mandrake 9.2 / gcc 3.3.1  /linux 2.4.22

(Mandrake have some mods to the gcc they release)

Borriss doesn't see the problem on a similar laptop running

    Mandrake 9.1 / gcc 3.2.2  /linux 2.4.21

I can get the speed up without changing os.cc, but adding a procedure
to base.cc (NO other difference from cvs, it is not called):

void my_void() { }

to base.cc.

Well, I said it was weird! So, either I am mad or stupid or there is
some subtle issue like memory alignment having a dramatic effect.
