I have been using the E-language mailinglist archive a lot. That one is 
organized per month and it _is_ very annoying indeed. To be able to use 
their archive (search and then follow complete threads from the 
beginning)  I  end up downloading the whole thing and importing it into 
my mail application.

I vote for making archive  periods as long as possible.
