That's actually the judgement at issue: when I reported this to the
gcc list, I was told that it was not clear at all that the old code
was actually better (it may feel esthetically better, but the real
point should be performance). I was asked to backup that contention
with a reproducible benchmark. Unless one can be produced, they (very
reasonably) won't even look into it.
It seems my program doesn't support the claim. Can this claim even be
substantiated by writing an assembly language program directly? Can
we measure any difference?
