explicit state

Hello!

I was following the samples in the book Concepts, Techniques, and Models 
of Computer Programming by Peter van Roy & Seif Haridi, but as i reached 
the chapter concerning state (Chapter 5) my examples didn't work any more.

It was not hard to discover that assigning to / retreaval of stateful 
datatypes outside a class is done using functions ({Assign ... and the like)

Does the book anticipate a planned extension to the language we will see 
in a subsequent release? Or is this chapter following an idealistic 
approach while breaking code compatibility ?
