As far as I know, this is absolutely the first time that this bug ever
had any effect. The triggering of it could also be specific to Solaris
9: you have to understand that this is a very bizarre situation where
a value being returned apparently becomes corrupted during execution
of the return instruction, but not always.  No, I don't understand it
either... but then the original code was wrong and I don't know what
it could have meant either (to the compiler).
