Thank you very much for the quick reply! 

I will correct the infinite loop as soon as I am ready 
with the current bit of program I am working on. I found out some
other mistakes in this piece of code.

Kevin, I am aware of the Duchier's xml-parsers. I will try to 
use them as soon as I get a valid xml-file (the current one is not
a valid one - some tags are missing; as you also notices - line 7, 
initial VP tag). But to confess my ignorance, I had problems 
figuring out how to use the xml-parser for my purposes. But I guess I have 
to read more about records and test with smaller input, not the 
current >300K text.
