Hi,

IMHO these "select" functions are primarily supposed to help you with 
unwanted emulator-process-blocking when doing network communication, not 
with disk file access.

I suggest that you take a look at the man pages of the underlying C 
function select(), e.g. at
  http://bama.ua.edu/cgi-bin/man-cgi?select+3C

(among other things, you may learn from the reference above that the 
call always returns immediately when the supplied argument is a disk 
file descriptor).
